So quite a while back, I made a map print skirt based on Studio Faro's pattern drafting instructions for a Charles James inspired skirt, and I loved it so much I decided to make another one. I know a lot of people hate making the same pattern twice, but I am definitely not one of them. If I like something, I'll keep going until I get bored of it.
For bonus repetition points, I used fabric leftover from my Simplicity 8342 trousers, which is this cool leather-look jersey.
This is one of the many, many projects I forgot to blog about in my half-year hiatus, but I did take photos at the time, so you can feast your eyes on them.
I won't go into the construction or anything, since it's exactly the same as last time, and if you actually want to find out how to make it, you're far better off just reading Studio Faro's post. But since the pattern was already drafted, this was a refreshingly quick project for me. There's only really one seam, a few gathers, a waistband, and a hem, and that's it done. If you're quick at sewing (I'm not) you could get this whipped up in a couple of hours.
I love the way the drape looks on this fabric, though something I didn't think about at the time, is that this fabric is heavier than the map print, so it wants to drag the gathers down and out of shape. This is a bit annoying, but you live and learn, I guess.
Other than that issue, I love how it looks, and if I had to pick between the two versions, I'm not sure which I'd choose. This one is probably more me, in that it's black and that is my default colour palette, but the map print one is just so mappy, you know what I mean?
(Worn with a me-made top you'll be surprised to hear isn't on the blog.)
But the fun doesn't stop here because I also have some up-to-date photos for you! In decent lighting as well! I went all gothic and wore it with a vintage Sew Easy pussy bow blouse which is not yet on the blog (shocking).
I'm glad I managed to get some photos with actual light, as the fabric has a beautiful sheen to it that the camera didn't want to pick up in the first round of photos.
Also, I really don't think these sunglasses suit me, but they went with the neo-Victorian look I had going on that day so who cares?
So that's it for now. Let me know what you guys think, and if you have a preference between the two versions I've done!
