I love me a high waisted trouser, and as soon as I discovered McCall's 7726*, there was pretty much no reason for me to ever use any other trouser pattern again. Slight exaggeration, but it's not really that far from the truth. I've already blogged about it a couple of times - for my pink shorts and damask trousers, and I've also used it for some pink tartan* trousers that will be coming to the Minerva* blog sometime soon. Basically, as with most things I make, I've made it before, and I fully intend to make it again.

This time, I decided to make two pairs at the same time - one in a royal blue and black wool check*(leftover from fabric provided to me by Minerva in exchange for this post*) and the other in petrol blue stretch velvet. The blue and black check version features quite prominently in a previous post for some retro wrap tops, so go check that out to see some extra photos of that.

I won't bother with any major construction notes or reviewing the pattern since I have other posts for that, but I hope that the fact that I've used this pattern at least 5 times is some indication of my thoughts on its worth.

The velvet version was the first time I used a stretch fabric for the pattern, and I am so happy I did. As much as I adore this pattern, one slight not quite issue, but inevitable inconvenience, is that in being tight and figure hugging around the waist, they're not the comfiest of trousers. Not that they're uncomfortable, but they're not relax around the house trousers. Under ordinary circumstances, I wouldn't consider this significant enough to be worth mentioning, they'd just be going out trousers, but we don't live in ordinary circumstances at the moment, and going out trousers aren't a thing.

So I was pretty pleased with myself when I accidentally stumbled upon the stylish version of sweatpants. These are genuinely the comfiest trousers I've ever worn - the fabric is teddy bear-level soft and has 4-way stretch so hugs the figure while feeling snug, rather than tight. I would be as happy to wear them lounging around on the sofa as I would be going out to dinner, again, if going out to dinner were a thing. Basically, they are the dream trousers of the quarantine era and I wholeheartedly recommend you all go and make yourselves some velvet trousers too!

I know I said I wouldn't go into any details on the pattern/construction, but one thing I have noticed when doing these two pairs of full length trousers (since I've previously blogged about the shorts and cropped trousers) is that they run surprisingly short. I am far from tall (5'6 if you're interested) but they were about 1/2" too short before folding up the hem. Luckily, this fabric doesn't fray, so I just left the hem au naturel to squeeze out as much length as I could. It's not too noticeable, but it's not the ideal solution. Next time I make them (there will be a next time) I think I'll add a couple of inches to the trouser cuffs to resolve this.

Since this was also an issue for the wool check version, which does fray, I overlocked the cuff edge (well, zigzag stitched) and left it as-is.

And that's pretty much all I have to say on these! I'm really happy with how these turned out and I can't wait to start making some more!

Oh, and for those interested, I'm wearing the velvet trousers with a black version of my self-drafted Giraffe Neck Top. I don't think I have a separate post on this particular top, but it's exactly the same, just in black.
See you next time!
