Lamour Sari Dress

I fell completely in love with the Charm Patterns Lamour Dress from the first time I saw it, but it took me a while to work out what fabric I wanted to use with it.

I also had this beautiful vintage sari I bought off eBay about a year ago, over which I'd been caught in a similar dilemma of what to make with it.

So the solution was simple...combine the two! What could be better for a detailed, horizontal print than an intricate bodice and a circle skirt?!

I decided on a full length skirt rather than knee length...don't ask for my justification there, I just did.

Although the dress was a little more complex than some of my more recent makes, the instructions actually made sense and were pretty easy to follow. The only real difficulty I came across with the bodice was all the damn pattern matching, which was incredibly time consuming.

The perfectionist in me still isn't completely satisfied with the pattern matching as it's about 1mm out. But on the other hand, it's only 1mm out, and if you're looking at it from a distance (which I hope anyone other than myself would be), you're never going to notice that it's not perfectly lined up. So given that this is by far the most complicated pattern matching I've ever done, I'm giving myself a pat on the back.

Onto the skirt. The fabric wouldn't have worked with the circle skirt the pattern provided, as the print would have ended up diagonal in parts and that would have just looked strange. So instead, I decided to follow my own devices and make a box pleated skirt. I measured the waist of the bodice and multiplied by 3 to get the length of fabric required, then just pleated away and sewed it on. This did create a bulkier waist seam than the circle skirt would have done, so I made a belt out of the sari trim and two hooks and eyes to cover this up.

I actually really love this dress. As I mentioned on Instagram, I don't really know when I'd wear it, but I really do hope I get the chance as something this awesome and insane doesn't deserve to spend its entire life in a wardrobe.
